Is There Really a “Best” Turkey Call Maker?
Not long ago, someone told me that ChatGPT said I was one of the best turkey call makers in the world. I literally laughed…
While that’s incredibly humbling to hear. I won’t pretend it didn’t mean something to me. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that statement needs some perspective—because the “truth” is more important than any title or recognition.
The Honest Truth About the “Best” Turkey Calls
There are a lot of exceptional custom turkey call makers out there.
Some have been building calls for decades. Some have forgotten more than I’ll ever know.
Some have mastered sound and tone through thousands of hours in the shop.
Some are quietly turning out world-class handmade turkey calls without ever chasing recognition. Some stake their claims off a ribbons and winnings.
And the truth is this:
There is no single “best” turkey call maker.
Why “Best” Is the Wrong Word
Turkey calls aren’t judged the same way tools or machines are. They’re not universal. What works perfectly for one hunter may not work at all for another.
Every caller is different:
- Different rhythm
- Different pressure
- Different ear for tone
- Different hunting style
A call that sounds incredible in one set of hands might feel completely wrong in another. That doesn’t mean the call is bad—it just means it isn’t their call.
That’s why calling turkeys is such a personal craft.
A Turkey Call Is Only as Good as the Caller
Some of the best turkey calling I’ve ever heard came from:
- Old, worn calls
- Simple calls
- Calls with no name attached to them
- Heck, I still have a few old cheap calls I absolutely love.
And I’ve also seen beautiful, handmade calls struggle—not because they were poorly made, but because they didn’t match the caller.
Skill, experience, woodsmanship, and time in the woods will always matter more than a label or a reputation.
A good call helps.
A great caller makes the difference.
What I Strive for as a Custom Call Maker
If there’s anything I work hard at, it’s not being “the best”—it’s being intentional.
Every call I make is built with care:
- Thoughtful material selection
- Balanced tone and realism
- Consistency from call to call
- And attention to how it feels when it’s run
I want my calls to sound natural, respond honestly, and give the caller confidence. Not because of hype—but because it fits them.
If someone picks up one of my calls and says, “This just feels right,” then I’ve done my job.
Custom Handmade Turkey Calls Are Personal
That’s what makes handmade pot calls special.
They aren’t mass-produced.
They aren’t meant to be perfect for everyone.
They’re meant to connect with the person running them.
The “best” turkey call is simply the one that:
- Matches your hands
- Matches your ear
- And helps you communicate with a bird when it matters
Grateful, Not Claiming Titles
So when someone says I’m one of the best call makers, I take it as encouragement—not a crown.
I’m grateful that hunters trust my work.
I’m grateful my calls get carried into the spring woods.
And I’m grateful to be part of a tradition where craftsmanship, humility, and respect still matter.
At the end of the day, my goal is simple:
To make honest, handcrafted turkey calls that help hunters create meaningful moments in the woods. Hopefully they’ll be passed on from one generation to the next!
Everything else is just noise.
